London Paralympics - Performance of Indian Players on Day 1

On day 1 of the London Paralympic Games two Indian players were in action. In Swimming Sharath Gayakwad was in action in men’s 100m Butterfly S8 event. Sharath Gayakwad, India’s only swimmer at the Paralympics, missed out on the finals of the 100m Butterfly event by 0.58 seconds. Gayakwad finished fourth in the 1st heat and 9th overall with a time of 1:07.12. The last qualifier was Spain’s Jaime Bailon who had a time of 1:06.54. He still has 3 events left at the Games. On 1st September, Sharath will be in action in 100m Breaststroke S8 event, on 3rd he will compete in the 50m freestyle S8 event and on 5th he will participate in the 200m Individual Medley.

The second Indian who competed on the first day of the Games was the Powerlifter  Farman Basha who competed in the men’s 48 kg wt. category event in Powerlifting. Basha, who won the Silver Medal  at the Asian Para Games in China in 2010, finished 5th overall with a total lift of 150 kg. Gold Medal went to Yakubu Adesokan of Nigeria with a total lift of 180 kg which is also the New World Record in this weight category. Silver Medal was won by Vladimir Balynetc of Russia who lifted 170 kg and Bronze was won by Taha Abdelmagid of Egypt with a total lift of 165 kg.

INDIAN PLAYERS IN ACTION ON 31st AUGUST

Naresh Sharma will be in action in the men’s 10m Air Rifle Standing- SH1 event.The qualification round starts at 1.30 PM and the finals at 5 PM.
