36-year-old champion to return to AEW TV after two years and confront Mercedes Mone? Analyzing the chances
AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Mone has had a successful run so far in the promotion. The CEO has her sights set on more gold as she recently teased potentially challenging the ROH Women's World Champion Athena. The former NXT star could make a jump to AEW TV if a title match gets put in place.
Athena has been conquering the ROH women's division since moving to the ROH brand in 2022. She had a brief run in AEW before joining ROH and winning the ROH Women's World Championship at Final Battle 2022. Athena had a successful title defense against Billie Starkz at ROH Final Battle 2024 PPV and she might shake things up by making a huge return to All Elite Wrestling television.
Ring of Honor recently celebrated Athena reaching two years as ROH Women's World Champion which also makes her the longest-reigning champion in the promotion's history. Mercedes Mone posted the 'eye' emoji in response which indicates that she might be gearing up to challenge the former Ember Moon for the title. The CEO already holds the TBS and NJPW Strong Women's Championship and a third title could be in her future if Tony Khan books the feud with The Fallen Goddess.
Athena claims she's better than AEW star Mercedes Mone
ROH Women's Champion Athena has been teasing to return to All Elite Wrestling television. She also revealed that talks with Tony Khan are in progress which could mean that she may soon be coming to the Jacksonville-based promotion.
In a recent chat with Denise Salcedo, The Fallen Goddess was asked about a potential matchup against Mercedes Mone. Athena claimed that she was better than The CEO and could prove it in the ring rather than showing off like Mone:
"The only difference between me and her is I have more experience, and I am more hungry. I don't have to do a little hip swivel dance and say, 'I got money!' No, I got grit; I got determination, and I got these two fists that will dot those eyes, hussy. So at the end of the day, like, I know that I'm better than her; it's a matter of showing the world that I'm better than her. At the same time, I'm curious how it would go."
The fans will have to wait and see if Athena and Mercedes Mone square off in All Elite Wrestling soon.
