5 potential surprises Tony Khan could pull off on AEW Dynamite this week
This week's Dynamite is scheduled to take place in the Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. As the year's biggest event, All In, draws closer, the rivalries between many stars are getting intense with each passing week.
The upcoming Wednesday night show could bring much more drama to the audience. Here are five potential surprises Tony Khan could have planned for the upcoming Dynamite episode.
5. Swerve Strickland beats up Wheeler Yuta
Swerve Strickland is set to put his AEW World Championship on the line against the 2024 Owen Hart Cup winner Bryan Danielson. On the August 7 edition of Dynamite, he and his upcoming All In opponent had a face-to-face confrontation.
During the segment, The Realest Star challenged Bryan's BCC teammate Wheeler Yuta for a match on Dynamite. He also promised to show The American Dragon why he's the most dangerous man in AEW.
To prove his point, the World Champion could launch a brutal attack on Yuta. He could even torture the BCC member during the match to intimidate The American Dragon.
4. Jon Moxley returns on Dynamite
Jon Moxley is one of the top stars in AEW and is a constant presence on weekly TV shows. However, he has been absent from television since July. The fans last saw him at Forbidden Door 2024 where he suffered a loss against Tetsuya Naito.
It was reported that he was granted some time off. But no specific reason for his absence was given. He was recently seen enjoying quality time with his wife Renee Paquette in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mox is advertised on the August 14 Dynamite poster on AEW's website. Also, he surely wouldn't want to miss the biggest event of the year. Therefore, the fans could see him return to AEW's flagship show this week.
3. The Acclaimed beat The Young Bucks, but no title change
Back in June, The Acclaimed beat The Young Bucks in a non-title match to earn themselves a future shot at the Tag Team Titles. Therefore, Max Caster and Anthony Bowens will challenge the Jackson brothers on Dynamite this week for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
The Bucks won the Tag Team Championship in April 2024 at Dynasty. They haven't put the title on the line since then. It will be their first title defense this coming Wednesday.
Chances are that Caster and Bowens might even beat the champs. However, it could be via disqualification which could lead to The EVPs retaining their belts.
2. Britt Baker returns and attacks Mercedes Mone
Last month, Britt Baker was suspended for a short period after a reported backstage altercation with MJF. In last week's edition, she made an appearance on Dynamite (not a physical one).
After Kamille's squash match, The CEO took the mic but was shortly interrupted by Tony Schiavone who revealed that Baker's suspension had been lifted. The former AEW Women's World Champion appeared on the jumbotron and humiliated the TBS Champion.
No official date for Baker's return has been announced yet. But she might return on this week's edition of Dynamite and attack her All In opponent for running her mouth against her over the past couple of weeks.
1. Luther joins Mariah May
This week's Dynamite will also feature a segment involving Mariah May. She turned heel and attacked her mentor Toni Storm around a month ago after she won the Women's Owen Hart Cup.
Since then, the former allies have become bitter enemies. AEW has done a fantastic job portraying a heartbroken Toni and an arrogant Mariah's story over the past few weeks.
To add more drama to their feud, AEW could book Luther to betray the reigning AEW Women's Champion and join her friend-turned-foe. This will make an isolated Toni more of a babyface, thus bringing in more sympathy from the fans.
