Former WWE champion to surprisingly dethrone The Elite member for one big reason? Looking at a potential swerve
A former WWE Cruiserweight Champion could dethrone a member of The Elite after months of being the champion due to an important reason. The star has not had a singles match in the past few months.
The former WWE champion in the discussion is Buddy Matthews. The Best Kept Secret has been with All Elite Wrestling since February 2022. He had an eight-year stint with the Stamford-based promotion from 2013 to 2021. During his run, the Australian became a one-time NXT Tag Team Champion, a one-time RAW Tag Team Championship, and a one-time Cruiserweight Champion.
Currently, Matthews is a part of the House of Black faction alongside Malakai Black, Brody King, and Julia Hart. Although he is a former World Trios Champion, Buddy has yet to win a singles title in Tony Khan's promotion. Well, the 36-year-old could accomplish his goal by dethroning the current TNT Champion and The Elite member, Jack Perry.
The Scapegoat has been the TNT Champion since the Forbidden Door pay-per-view earlier this year. Hence, Matthews could be the worthy star to capture the title from Perry. With the AEW Grand Slam Australia coming up in February 2025, the Melbourne-born star could be crowned the new champion in front of his home fans.
In order to make Matthews a big deal in February next year, the Tony Khan-led creative team could build him as a strong challenger to Perry's title ahead of the event, culminating in the former WWE star's fairytale victory Down Under. However, the angle is speculative at this point.
A former WWE star is set for a big match on this week's AEW Dynamite
Buddy Matthews had his last singles match on AEW TV during an episode of Collision in August 2024. He defeated Komander. Meanwhile, the Aussie star is set for a big singles match against Adam Cole, who is set to make his in-ring return after over a year. The match is set for AEW Fright Night Dynamite this Wednesday.
It remains to be seen what transpires this Wednesday as Buddy looks to reignite his singles career.
