Has Tony Khan lost confidence in 36-year-old AEW star? Exploring all the signs
Despite making an explosive debut in AEW earlier this year, a 36-year-old former WWE Superstar has recently lost some credibility and momentum, according to fans and critics. To make matters worse, Ricochet, the talent being alluded to, was involved in a controversial segment this week that may have affected his perception of being a top name.
After arriving at All In 2024, Ricochet went on a winning streak that earned him multiple shots at the AEW International Championship. After failing to dethrone Will Ospreay for the title on Dynamite due to outside interference and later in a triple threat match at WrestleDream 2024 that would be won by Konosuke Takeshita, The One and Only suffered his first singles loss in the Tony Khan-led company when The Alpha beat him to retain the International Championship at Full Gear.
Four days later, however, Ricochet lost to Claudio Castagnoli in his first Continental Classic match on Dynamite: Thanksgiving Eve. The former WWE Intercontinental and United States Champion bounced back with wins over fellow Gold League block members Komander and Brody King. Around the same time, he began showing signs of a possible heel turn; firstly, by seemingly entertaining the thought of joining The Hurt Syndicate despite having turned them down earlier, and secondly, in the manner of his victory over the House of Black member on Dynamite: Winter is Coming.
Furthermore, the 36-year-old star has tried to flesh out his character, although fans have not quite taken to his new on-screen mannerisms. In addition, The Human Highlight Reel was arguably humiliated this week on Dynamite: Holiday Bash, where he was physically bullied by members of The Hurt Syndicate and called out for trying to join the faction through flattery. Even former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland took shots at Ricochet during their meeting backstage, dubbing the latter a "follower."
Viewers and industry experts alike have been discussing the topic of Ricochet's recent All Elite booking, leading some to wonder whether Tony Khan is no longer interested in presenting him as a top star. Alternatively, AEW could simply be taking its time to develop a long-term storyline with The Future of Flight, which could see him eventually join the former Hurt Business. Furthermore, with six points in his bag, Ricochet is tied with three of his peers at the top of his Continental Classic league, inching closer to Worlds End 2024 and the Continental Title.
What's next for Ricochet in AEW?
All Elite Wrestling will present Christmas Collision from the iconic Hammerstein Ballroom this week. The episode will feature a massive rematch as Ricochet squares off against Will Ospreay in the Continental Classic Gold League.
Considering their last All Elite bout ended in a no contest, it remains to be seen how far the two high-flyers are willing to go for a definitive victory over the other on Saturday.
