22-year veteran addresses rumors of AEW arrival: “Loose lips sink ships”
A 22-year wrestling veteran has finally addressed rumors about his potential AEW arrival while speaking in a recent interview. The star in question is Alex Shelley.
The Student Of The Game began his pro wrestling career in 2002. Since then, he has cultivated the reputation of being one of the foremost singles and tag team competitors in the industry, with decorated runs in various promotions including ROH, NJPW, and TNA. Shelley is best known for his partnership with Chris Sabin, and the two of them make up the iconic tag team, The Motor City Machine Guns.
Shelley and Sabin became free agents in April this year after their TNA contracts expired. This sparked rumors regarding MCMG potentially signing with AEW. The speculations have grown more widespread since it was reported that the former IMPACT World Tag Team Champions were finalizing a deal with the Tony Khan-led promotion. During a recent appearance, Shelley himself provided a comment on the report.
On the Saturday Night's Main Event podcast, the former TNA World Champion was asked whether he has had conversations with AEW. Alex Shelley responded by refusing to divulge information regarding a prospective future in the Jacksonville-based company.
"No, I wouldn't share any of that. Loose lips sink ships," he said. (H/T Fightful)
The Motor City Machine Guns did appear in All Elite Wrestling in 2022, teaming with Jay Lethal in an unsuccessful bid against FTR and Wardlow at AEW All Out that year.
Alex Shelley spoke about wanting new challenges amid AEW rumors
During a discussion on Wrestlemobs with Bodyslam.net on the heels of his TNA departure, Alex Shelley reflected on whether there were opponents he specifically wanted to take on. The 41-year-old star responded by voicing his excitement over new opportunities that he and his partner Chris Sabin could utilize. He also claimed that MCMG had fulfilled their goals in TNA, and stated that it was time for a different tag team to take up after them in the Nashville-based promotion.
“I wouldn’t say it’s dream matches necessarily. It’s more so just kind of like, we’re happy to tackle anything new. Where we’re coming from in TNA, Sabin and I, we’ve done everything there is to do there. Everything there is to do. So it’s time for somebody else to step up and become the new Motor City Machine Guns for that company.” (H/T Wrestletalk)
Shelley further expressed his gratitude for being able to make a livelihood in the wrestling industry.
It remains to be seen whether The Motor City Machine Guns make their way to AEW.
