29-year-old reflects on AEW booking of only 9 matches in 2 years
A former AEW star recently talked about his brief run with the company and how he only competed in a limited number of matches. He claimed that he was not able to showcase his abilities fully. This would be Fuego Del Sol.
The luchador has been appearing for the Tony Khan-led promotion on Dark since 2020, but his run was not good. In 2021, he made brief TV appearances, as he was involved in a feud with Miro on Rampage. Around this time, TK offered him a contract. Just last year, he exited the company.
On X/Twitter, Fuego Del Sol spoke about his run in AEW, including only nine live TV matches and around 15 overall TV appearances. He also spoke about never getting the chance to showcase his skills in the ring and on the mic.
"In the two years that I was signed to AEW, I only had 9 TV matches and really overall only about 15 appearances. None of those matches were over 10 minutes long, and the primary goal of those matches were to showcase my opponents and focus on making them look good as opposed to myself. So the vast majority of fans that know of me haven't really ever seen what I'm truly capable of in-ring or on the mic when given proper time to showcase my skills and storytelling abilities."
He mentioned that he did not think it was AEW's fault, as he felt he should have pushed for more things. Now, he was on the road to proving himself in the Indies, hoping to get a bigger chance to show what he could do.
"But I'm not blaming AEW for that because, in hindsight, I should have fought harder to showcase myself more in the matches I did have. But I've always been of the mindset that you play the role that you're given to the best of your abilities in hopes to earn a better role in the future. So now I'm on a much tougher, slower, arduous grind every weekend going to smaller indie companies, trying to showcase how good I can be when given proper time to tell the stories I wanna tell. Something I unfortunately didn't get to show."
Fuego Del Sol made a brief AEW return a few months ago
Back in August, Fuego made a one-off appearance for the promotion as he faced off with Roderick Strong in singles competition on Rampage.
Ahead of All In, he took on the Messiah of the Backbreaker as he was preparing for the Casino Gauntlet match that took place at the pay-per-view. Despite a great showing, he eventually fell to Strong.
A few weeks before this, he appeared on ROH, competing in six matches over two months.
At this point, it remains to be seen whether this was his last time competing for the promotion or whether he'll continue to make one-off appearances moving forward along with competing in the independent circuit.
