33-year-old AEW star says he is done with tag team wrestling
Wrestling tag teams and stables, including those in the AEW, are destined to break and have all the members attempt to become active in singles wrestling. Most of the time, it is a given and is just a storyline. In some cases, the wrestler decides to pursue singles championships.
One such wrestler is Angel Ortiz, who is currently signed up with AEW and recently broke up with his tag-team member of many years, Mike Santana. Together, they were sometimes dubbed as 'The Proud & Powerful'.
In a conversation with Shining Wizards Wrestling Podcast, Eddie Kingston's former team partner opened up about why he left tag team wrestling.
"Right now I'm not tag team wrestling, which is a new adventure for me, because I spent the majority of my career as a tag guy, I'm kind of trying to find my voice. I still don't know what the answer is, but it's almost exciting because I get a new palette to paint with," he said. (H/T wrestlinginc.com)
Ortiz has had a handful of singles matches since he announced his intention to only compete in them. What he can achieve as a singles wrestler remains to be seen.
AEW's Ortiz and Santana have seemingly broken up over a real-life rift
Ortiz and Santana were highly successful as a tag team, and their break up created shockwaves throughout the industry. However, it is now being claimed that it was Santana who was adamant that he didn't want to work with Ortiz and revealed this on the same podcast.
"Unfortunately, it wasn’t the company’s call to split us. Me and Santana just couldn’t get it together personally and he was just very adamant about not working with me anymore," Ortiz shared. (H/T postwrestling.com)
While real-life rifts have always made great angles for wrestling storylines, it remains to be seen whether AEW will use the animosity between the two for an angle.
