36-year-old star turned down AEW: 'I never necessarily got interested' in being famous
After WWE, AEW is the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the world. Meanwhile, a 36-year-old star turned down the opportunity to work with Tony Khan.
Marty Scurll is popularly known for his work in Ring of Honor, where he wrestled and also was the head booker of the promotion for some time. He has wrestled in other top promotions, like TNA, NJPW, NWA, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. He is currently performing in the Indies.
The 36-year-old star recently sat down for a virtual interview on Thats Wrestling!, where he revealed the reason for not joining All Elite Wrestling despite being a top star in its sister promotion, ROH.
"I think that's something people don’t realize. I felt like a lot of people were like, 'Why didn’t you sign with AEW? I can’t believe you stayed with Ring of Honor. It’s like I knew AEW was going to be a bigger company, but I never necessarily got interested to be like famous or anything. I just wanted to be known as a good wrestler, if that makes sense. I guess famous for wrestling, but either way to me it was kind of like, Okay, I can go to AEW and I can be one of many other wrestlers, but this company has put the faith in me and the trust to be the head booker, and working in creative, along with being a wrestler, was one of my lifelong dreams.'" The star who turned down AEW has been a wrestling fan since childhood
Marty Scrull, in the same interview, also revealed that he has been a huge fan of wrestling since he was a kid. He added that he used to create fantasy bookings when he was very young.
"I was the guy when he was a kid doing the fantasy booking. [It] started out with my wrestling figures; later on then I was watching writing shows. I used to write episodes of RAW and try and format them and send them to I don't know." [19:22 - 19:35]
The English pro wrestler's last match occurred at PTW/WWA Takeover on October 26, 2024, where he defeated Martyrium.
