Adam Cole opens up about emotional battle over fear of AEW career ending
Adam Cole recently talked about his headspace when he was dealing with a career-threatening ankle injury a few months ago. Due to this, he could not compete for more than a year on AEW.
The Panama City Playboy returned to the ring almost a month ago at Fright Night Dynamite, facing Buddy Matthews. In the following weeks, he has had matches with the likes of Malakai Black and Konosuke Takeshita, formalizing his return to form in AEW.
During his recent interview with PennLive.com, Adam Cole discussed how, despite the severity of his injury, he was determined to make a comeback. He mentioned how it never crossed his mind to hand up his boots, as he knew that he wanted to keep doing what he loved. He mentioned how he had no second thoughts about working to get back.
“I just mentally was not at a place at all where I was ready to accept that. I love this so, so much. Through the concussion and through the ankle, there was never a point where I thought, ‘maybe I should stop.’ I was so determined and so focused to say, ‘No, no, I’ve got to get back out there. I’ve got to do what I love to do for a little while longer.’ I definitely never for a second thought, ‘Okay, this is it.’ I thought, ‘How do I get back?’” Cole said. [H/T PennLive.com]
Adam Cole has hit a major setback in his return to the company
When he returned at WrestleDream last month, Adam Cole's primary goal was going after MJF. He wanted to finally get his hands on him after being held back due to his ankle injury.
Friedman did not make it easy, and he wanted Cole to earn a match with him. With Roderick Strong taking interest in facing him as well, he proposed a race between the two, with the first to get three wins being the one who faces him at Full Gear.
In the end, it was Strong who earned the shot at MJF. Adam Cole fell short after Konosuke Takeshita stole a victory from him, meaning Strong was the first to reach the three-win mark. He was at a loss for words when asked about this after the show.
Now, it seems that the former NXT Champion may have to stay patient, as his close friend will clash with the former AEW World Champion at Full Gear. It remains to be seen when he'll get his chance.
