AEW star Athena (fka Ember Moon) provides unfortunate update on her in-ring status
AEW star Athena recently shared a heartbreaking update about her in-ring status. She was previously associated with WWE from 2015 to 2021. She was an unstoppable force on the NXT brand but unfortunately did not get a massive push on the main roster and was eventually released in November 2021.
The War Goddess made her AEW debut in 2022 and was presented as a top star in the Tony Khan-led promotion. Months later, she defeated Mercedes Martinez to become the ROH Women's World Champion. The 35-year-old star has held the title for more than 566 days at this point, defeating the majority of the female stars.
In May 2024, Athena faced Viva Van and sustained a leg injury. The War Goddess revealed that she would be sidelined for four to six months. She also stated that she will not be vacating the ROH Women's World Championship despite being injured.
In the recent ROH edition, the 35-year-old star revealed that she would be out for eight to twelve months now as her ligament has also been damaged.
What the future has in store for the former NXT Women's Champion remains to be seen.
AEW star Athena said she was "tiers above" Mercedes Mone
Mercedes Mone, formerly known as Sasha Banks, made her AEW debut at Dynamite: Big Business in March 2024. In a very short time, The CEO has proved to be a top star in the Tony Khan-led promotion and is also the reigning TBS Champion.
While speaking on the Good Karma Wrestling podcast, Athena applauded Mone's in-ring skills and later claimed to be superior to her.
"She [Mercedes Mone] adds star power. She adds confidence, right? Like I think for so long, we as a women’s division, especially in AEW, we’re having these great matches, and we had stars, right? But we were trying to breach the ceiling of star power, and I think Mercedes Mone brings that to the table. (...) Now, with that being said, your Minion Overlord is just tiers above her. Tiers above her, like she’s doing great over there, we’re doing the Minion Overlord's work over here," Athena said.
It will be interesting to see if Athena is forced to vacate the ROH Women's World Championship as her recovery time is extended.
