AEW star who came out of retirement lays down a challenge to Bryan Danielson for a rematch after 15 years
An AEW personality who recently came out of retirement has issued a challenge to Bryan Danielson to face him in a re-match nearly fifteen years in the making. The individual in question is Nigel McGuinness.
McGuinness returned to the squared circle for the first time since 2011 at All In 2024, stunning fans in the Wembley Stadium as a surprise entrant in the Casino Gauntlet Match for a future opportunity to compete for the AEW World Championship. Although he failed to win the bout, his desire to pursue the world title has now put him on a collision course with his long-time rival, Bryan Danielson.
The American Dragon went to war with McGuinness on several occasions during their time together in ROH years ago, wrestling their last match against each other in 2009. It seems like the feud between the two men will continue after the latest developments from the September 11, 2024 edition of Dynamite.
This week's episode of the Wednesday night show saw Jon Moxley challenge Darby Allin to put his AEW World Title shot on the line at Grand Slam 2024 later this month. The former TNT Champion accepted the challenge, which seemingly suggested that Bryan Danielson would not compete at the event.
However, later on in the night, Nigel McGuinness took to a microphone to call out the former BCC member. The Englishman revealed having spoken to Tony Khan, and showed the crowd a contract for a match between him and Danielson for Grand Slam 2024, challenging the Washington native to face him for the AEW World Championship. The bout was later made official on the condition that the 43-year-old star - who was horrifically assaulted by Jon Moxley at All Out - is cleared for and makes it to the event.
It remains to be seen whether Bryan Danielson will accept Nigel McGuinness' challenge to square off for the first time in All Elite Wrestling.
