AEW star reveals getting a phone call from Ronda Rousey to wrestle for Tony Khan's company
A current AEW and ROH star recalled how she got a phone call from the former WWE RAW Women's Champion Ronda Rousey to wrestle for Tony Khan's promotion. The star also revealed how Khan got involved.
The AEW star in question is the current ROH Women's World Champion Athena (fka Ember Moon). The 35-year-old star has been the face of Tony Khan-owned Ring of Honor since 2022. She also had a match involving the former UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey last year as well.
Athena teamed with Billie Starkz to take on the team of Ronda and Marina Shafir in a tag match in November last year on Ring of Honor and a charity show before that as well. During her recent interview with Stephanie Chase, Athena disclosed how she got a call from The Rowdy One to have a match with her:
"Honestly, she like called me out of the balloon, and I was like, 'Oh c*ap, this is an emergency,' and she goes, 'Hey, you want to wrestle?' and I was like, 'What do you mean?' and she goes, 'Yeah I really want to do a tag match between me and Marina [Shafir] and you and Billie [Starkz]. And I go, 'Okay...um...sure I guess like how are we gonna do this?' and she's like, 'Hey I wanna do this charity show,' and then we got Tony Khan involved, and like he just made it all happen." AEW star on having a match with Ronda Rousey
In the same interview, the AEW and Ring of Honor star Athena also opened up about her feelings after having a match with the former UFC Fighter Ronda Rousey. The ROH Women's World Champion stated the following:
"I think people seeing Ronda in a different atmosphere, they were shocked at what she was capable of. And that just goes to show if you have the right dance partner like anything can happen. I love Ron, I love Marina and it's really cool to be able to say that, 'Yeah, I had a match with Ronda Rousey.'" [From 14:50 to 15:10]
Moreover, Ronda has not made another appearance on ROH or in AEW after her match last year. Only time will tell if she will become All Elite in the future.
