AEW star says she is better than Mercedes Mone, willing to prove it in a match 6 years after they last worked together in WWE
Mercedes Mone is one of the top stars in AEW. She currently sits at the top of the ladder in the women's division with two championships around her waist, the AEW TBS Championship and the NJPW Strong Women's Title. However, reigning ROH Women's World Champion Athena believes she's better than The CEO.
Both female stars have previously worked together in WWE. Mone used to go by the name Sasha Banks, while fans used to call Athena ''Ember Moon.'' They often crossed paths but never had a singles match. Their last match occurred on May 7, 2018, in which the former Ember Moon defeated The CEO and Ruby Riott in a Triple Threat Match to qualify for the Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
The 36-year-old star recently had an interview with Denise Salcedo on the latter's YouTube channel. Athena was asked to comment on potentially facing Mercedes Mone in the future. In response, The Wrestling Goddess said that she would beat The CEO in a one-on-one match.
"I've been in matches with her former self, and she's never beaten me. I look at that and know those weren't singles matches; there were other variables. If it came down to me versus Mercedes Mone one-on-one, Athena versus Mercedes Mone, that has to headline; that has to be a main event," she said.
Athena reiterated that she's better than the erstwhile Sasha Banks and can prove it inside the ring.
"The only difference between me and her is I have more experience, and I am more hungry. I don't have to do a little hip swivel dance and say, 'I got money!' No, I got grit; I got determination, and I got these two fists that will dot those eyes, hussy. So at the end of the day, like, I know that I'm better than her; it's a matter of showing the world that I'm better than her. At the same time, I'm curious how it would go," she added. [16:30-18:55]
Mercedes Mone has seemingly set her eyes on Athena's title
Athena is the reigning ROH Women's World Champion. She has crossed the two-year mark as champion. Recently, a post on X highlighted her accomplishment. The post caught Mone's attention, and she reacted to it with an eyes emoji.
It will be interesting to see if The CEO and The War Goddess cross paths inside the squared circle in the future.
