Chris Jericho makes major comments about John Cena's WWE retirement
John Cena shocked the WWE Universe earlier this summer by announcing his retirement for 2025. Chris Jericho previously opened up on his longtime rival's announcement and made viral remarks on their longevity. Now the AEW champion has offered more insight on Cena hanging up his boots.
The Face That Runs The Place and the current FTW Champion have shared the ring more than 80 times. Their last singles bout came on June 25, 2012, as Cena won the match on RAW by DQ in just over eight minutes. Jericho even filmed a tribute video that aired during Cena's 20th Anniversary RAW special in June 2022, while being signed with AEW.
The Learning Tree recently spoke with Sports Illustrated and said he's not surprised that Cena is finishing his career with the Stamford-based promotion, even with the leadership change. The 34-year industry veteran does not think we will see the 47-year-old do any wrestling work outside WWE.
"John is a WWE man through and through. I would be so surprised if he ever did anything outside of WWE. Congratulations to him on his incredible career. I loved our matches. It’s not like he’s riding off into the sunset–he has a lot of projects going on, and I wish him all the best," Chris Jericho said.
The Cenation leader and Jericho last worked together on August 15, 2016. The RAW dark main event in Corpus Christi, TX that night saw Cena and Dean Ambrose aka Jon Moxley defeat Jericho and Seth Rollins.
Chris Jericho reunites with WWE Hall of Famer
Chris Jericho has reunited with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. The wrestling legends were both in attendance for this week's AEW Dynamite from Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The 53-year-old and Steamboat worked together in 2009 for the storyline that saw the Hall of Famer battle Y2J. Jericho defeated Steamboat, Roddy Piper, and Jimmy Snuka at WrestleMania 25. However, a night later on RAW, Steamboat teamed with John Cena, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, and Jeff Hardy for a win over Jericho, Edge, Big Show, Kane, and Matt Hardy. Chris then defeated Ricky in singles action at Backlash 2009 later that same month.
AEW's current FTW Champion shared a photo of him and The Dragon backstage on Wednesday.
Jericho did commentary during Katsuyori Shibata vs. Bryan Keith on Wednesday's Dynamite. Steamboat was brought in to be the special ringside guest during the Anything Goes Match between Bryan Danielson and Jeff Jarrett.
