Dustin Rhodes reacts to WWE Legend claiming he wasn't a good Intercontinental Champion
The WWE career of Dustin Rhodes includes many noteworthy chapters, and many believe the final chapter has not been written as his brother, Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes, still works for the company. Dustin held several titles over the years and just responded to what a fellow WWE legend had to say about the Intercontinental Championship.
The Natural returned to WWE for his biggest push in August 1995 as Goldust. The bizarre character had three Intercontinental Championship reigns, beginning at Royal Rumble 1996 after dethroning Razor Ramon. The title was vacated 63 days later due to a screwy finish against Savio Vega. Goldust beat Vega for the vacant title one week later, but Ahmed Johnson ended the reign 82 days later at King of the Ring. In March 1999, Rhodes dethroned "Road Dogg" Brian James, but The Godfather ended that reign at just two weeks.
Goldust's third and final reign was possible because he ended Road Dogg's only Intercontinental Championship run. The March 15, 1999 RAW saw James defeat Val Venis for the title, but he dropped it two weeks later after a few notable title defenses: Elimination Matches over Goldust, Venis, and Ken Shamrock at three live events; a RAW champion vs. champion No Contest against then-Hardcore Champion Billy Gunn; retaining over Goldust, Venis, and Shamrock in the same match at WrestleMania XV.
Road Dogg's loss to Goldust was just one night after WrestleMania XV. Following Bron Breakker's title win over Jey Uso on RAW this week, Road Dogg took to X to comment on his own reign with the title. WWE's current Senior Vice President of Live Events admitted that he was not the best IC Champion.
"One time I won the IC Title I wasn’t a very good at it! #YEET OR #BARK #WWERaw," Brian James wrote.
Rhodes responded and disagreed with the DX member. The current ROH World Tag Team and World Trios Champion praised Road Dogg as incredible and mentioned a broken hand suffered during their match.
"U crazy!!! You were incredible!! So good I broke my hand with u!! [face with tears of joy emoji] I loved working you," Dustin Rhodes wrote.
James has not publicly responded as of this writing. The exchange is very interesting after they've previously discussed a RAW incident from 2014. Dusty Rhodes was said to be upset at Road Dogg for failing to safely catch Cody's moonsault from a Steel Cage while he and Dustin Rhodes faced The New Age Outlaws. The Dream "flipped out" on Road Dogg backstage but later apologized.
Dustin Rhodes to compete following AEW injury update
Dustin Rhodes is currently a dual champion in Ring of Honor. The 55-year-old holds the ROH World Trios Championship with The Von Erichs and the World Tag Team Championship with Sammy Guevara.
Guevara suffered a concussion in the referee's decision loss to Serpentico on October 2, in what was apparently a ROH dark match at the AEW Collision tapings. He was just medically cleared to compete and is expected to continue his reign as champions with Rhodes.
Sammy Guevara will face Shelton Benjamin on Wednesday's AEW Dynamite. While he is advertised as ROH champion, it remains to be seen if Dustin Rhodes will be in his corner. Their last title defense was the Bunkhouse Brawl during Collision on September 21, where they retained over The Undisputed Kingdom.
