Former Intercontinental Champion reveals why he missed major WWE show; AEW had issues with it
A legendary wrestling name has disclosed interesting details regarding missing a WWE show from a few years back that surprised fans. The person in question is AEW star Billy Gunn, who opened up about missing the D-Generation X reunion from 2022.
The stable celebrated its 25th anniversary on the October 10 episode of WWE RAW. The segment was graced by all members of the stable, including Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Road Dogg, and X-Pac, barring Billy Gunn. Though Gunn is a part of AEW, many hoped the two promotions could come to an agreement to let the former IC Champion celebrate alongside his former stablemates.
Appearing on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Billy Gunn spilled the beans on what went down behind the scenes regarding the situation. Gunn explained that while he would loved to reunite with his DX stablemates, he understood AEW's decision to turn it down as WWE wasn't willing to acknowledge the promotion on TV.
"It was just a miscommunication. It was trying to get [there] and believe you me, I get it. I work for a completely different company. If I can do it, fine. If I can't, I get it, I'm not going to [be mad]," said Gunn. "I spent the majority of my life doing that company and being a part of it. So, of course, they want me to be there, but if the company that I'm with now has some issues of what they need and what they want, and if it doesn't work out, then I can't go. I can't be mad about it." [H/T - WrestlingInc]
WWE legend Billy Gunn wants Will Ospreay to retire him
Elsewhere on the podcast, Billy Gunn spoke about how he was willing to step inside the ring with Will Ospreay in his retirement match.
The WWE Hall of Famer stated that he was a fan of The Aerial Assassin's work and that since both of them had diametrically different wrestling styles, they could have a great in-ring outing.
"I don’t know what it is about that kid [Will Ospreay]. I love him; I tell everybody that’s my retirement match. When I retire, it’s me and Will, and he just said on some media scrum that he’s in AEW to retire me. Because his work really isn’t me. It’s so opposite of me. But I love him. He’s good. He’s very energetic. Just the stuff he does is amazing. He’s so athletic and could do so much stuff. But he has charisma with it, and he’s very good at that. And I love that; I don’t know, I just love that kid," he said.
Though age isn't on his side, Billy Gunn still regularly steps inside the ring and delivers up to the high standards set up by other names in AEW.
