Former US Champion considered retiring in AEW; wants to end his career in WWE now
A former WWE champion considered retiring in AEW. But he wants to retire in WWE now.
Matt Hardy started his WWE career as part of The Hardy Boyz. He and Jeff Hardy along with the Dudley Boys and Edge and Christian were responsible for the growth of WWE's tag team division. Jeff and Matt were very popular with the fans. Even after splitting up as a tag team, Matt would achieve success as a singles star and he even won the United States Championship.
After he left WWE, Matt Hardy went to TNA where he became one of their top stars with his 'Broken' gimmick before eventually returning to the Stamford-based promotion. Matt would leave WWE again and this time join AEW where he spent a few years before leaving the company and heading back to TNA.
During a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, the wrestling legend revealed that he considered retiring in AEW. However, he now wants to finish his career in WWE.
“WWE was our birthplace. Without the WWE, we wouldn’t have become who we ultimately became, these tag team legends, however people view us or the worst tag team ever. You know, Matt and Jeff Hardy. Whatever you think our legacy is, that happened because of WWE giving us an opportunity, obviously, so that will always be viewed as our home."
He continued:
"We’ve said this before and I’ve said this on this podcast, ad nauseam that I think we want to finish in WWE now because that is our home. That seems like the right way to do it. I mean, there was a time with AEW where I would have been cool doing it there and just finishing up there, but I think now to really come full circle and come back around to where we were and the people that first gave us our opportunity to become stars and achieve this dream that we aspired to do, I think we want to finish our deal at WWE, end our careers there and do a Hall of Fame thing. We’ll see.” [H/T PWMania]
Former AEW star Matt Hardy reveals why Vince McMahon booked stars to lose in their hometown
For several decades, Vince McMahon was in charge of all the booking decisions for WWE. There were many creative decisions he took that ultimately led the company to become the behemoth that it is. However, there is one booking that was always questioned. In most cases, Vince booked a superstar to lose in their hometown.
Speaking on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy explained that Vince probably did that to get heat on a wrestler.
"I think he [Vince McMahon] felt like it was going to get good heat, and I think in his mind he justified like, 'I can get heat on an individual by taking advantage of the hometown star. And then, I'll use this heat to build them into something bigger,'" he said. [H/T: Wrestling Inc]
It still remains to be seen whether Matt Hardy will ever make his return to the Stamford-based promotion.
