Former WWE Intercontinental Champion confirms talks with AEW
A former Intercontinental Champion and veteran disclosed that he had talks with AEW amid his release from the WWE last year. The veteran has been rumored to sign with Tony Khan's promotion for months.
The former WWE Intercontinental Champion in question is none other than Shelton Benjamin. Shelton, along with several other stars, was released from the Stamford-based promotion in September 2023 as a part of the budget cuts. The 49-year-old veteran achieved several accolades during his two-decade run in the biggest wrestling promotion.
Meanwhile, Benjamin is currently a free agent and has been rumored to sign with AEW for the past several months. In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Shelton confirmed that he had brief talks with Tony Khan's promotion, also disclosing that he is open to options like TNA and MLW:
"I had a brief conversation with AEW, that hasn't really borne fruit yet. But I'm still open. TNA I haven't spoken with yet. I'm more than willing to work with them. I haven't talked to them. I know MLW reached out. So you know, I've been presented with options. I just haven't found something that I'm satisfied with," he said. [chrisvanvliet.com]
Shelton Benjamin on if he would return to the WWE
As mentioned earlier, Shelton Benjamin was released from the WWE in September last year and is still a free agent. On being asked whether he would consider going back to the Stamford-based promotion, Shelton stated:
"I would definitely consider it. Like I said, it's the biggest game in town. So because I've worked there for so long, to answer your question, Yes I will go back if they offered me a position back and the right amount of money. Meanwhile, Shelton Benjamin continues to perform on the independent wrestling scene before getting a full-time contract. Only time will tell what the future has in store for the 49-year-old veteran.
