Former WWE star reveals Adam Copeland was responsible for bringing him back to AEW
A former WWE Intercontinental Champion has revealed how Adam Copeland was instrumental in bringing him back to AEW for a massive dream match. The said performer is Matt Cardona, who disclosed that he sent a message to the former TNT Champion about his desire to meet him inside the squared circle.
Before he was forced to vacate his title and take a hiatus from Tony Khan's promotion, Copeland regularly conducted "The Cope Open" challenge, where a variety of performers got a chance to challenge him for the gold. One such instance saw the unexpected return of Matt Cardona to the company, who showed up on the March 30th episode of AEW Collision to challenge his former WWE colleague.
In a recent chat with Inside The Ropes, Cardona revealed that after a match between him and Copeland never came to fruition in WWE, he wanted to make it a reality in All Elite Wrestling. The Indy God disclosed that he sent a text to Adam Copeland about wanting to face him, to which the latter responded positively.
''But once he goes to AEW, it’s still on the table because AEW, with the Forbidden Door, anybody can come in and out. A few months ago, he was doing his Cope Open, and I shot him a text. I shot my shot. I don’t know if this has been said publicly. But I said, basically, I’m paraphrasing here, something like, 'Gotta shoot my shot here. You got the Cope Open; this is my dream match. I would really appreciate it if you’d consider me as a challenger!' He was really cool about it and said they were finishing up the Cope Open, but if it ever happened again, he’d keep me in mind,” he revealed. [H/T: ITRWrestling.com]
Chelsea Green wants to see Matt Cardona back in WWE
In a recent chat with Sportskeeda Wrestling, Chelsea Green discussed how she wanted to see her husband back in WWE. Apart from that, the SmackDown Superstar said that she would also like to see former NXT star and Cardona's current on-screen ally, Steph De Lander, return to the Stamford-based promotion.
"I don't know if I would work with him [Matt Cardona] but let's put a pin in that one; I am not sure. But I would obviously love to see him back. I mean, ideally, I would love to see him and Steph [De Lander] back together to do the GCW shtick. But you know, I would take him as my mix-tag partner if I needed to," Chelsea said.
Cardona has himself been vocal about his desire to return, and it now remains to be seen if the higher-ups would like to bring him under the company's umbrella.
