Former WWE star reveals she's in talks with Tony Khan about finally returning to AEW
The AEW and ROH rosters are packed with dozens of wrestlers. Tony Khan seems to be constantly on the hunt for new talent acquisitions while negotiating contracts with his current talents. One former WWE star who has found massive success as of late just revealed that she may be returning to All Elite Wrestling in the near future.
Athena began wrestling in 2007 and spent time with ROH and various indie promotions before joining WWE in 2015. Her six-year run came to an end in November 2021, and by May 2022 she was All Elite. Later that year, the former Ember Moon debuted for Khan's ROH, and weeks later she dethroned Mercedes Martinez to become the ROH Women's World Champion. The 35-year-old passed the 600-day mark in her title reign today.
The War Goddess has had around 18 AEW appearances since becoming ROH champion, and fans often wonder if she will ever return to a regular role on Dynamite. Speaking to Stephanie Chase for a recent interview, Athena revealed that she does want to return to AEW, and has talked with Khan about the move.
"It's something that Tony and I talk about quite a bit in person. It's like... OK, we did Battle of the Belts, you know, we're sprinkling it here and there. We've done pre-shows on multiple pay-per-views with myself and Billie Starkz, and Lexi Nair in there as well. I think it's just a matter of time," Athena said. [From 9:50 to 10:08]
Athena's last All Elite match was at Battle of the Belts X in April, where she retained over Red Velvet. Her last title defense was a win over Queen Aminata at ROH Death Before Dishonor last Friday.
Athena issues warning to AEW locker room
Athena is on her way to being ROH Women's World Champion for two years. However, she has just made it clear that she is planning a return to the AEW ring.
The Wrestling Goddess recently spoke with Stephanie Chase and gave props to All Elite Wrestling's current women's division. She also issued a harsh warning for the future.
"We have Mercedes Moné, Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, we have so many amazing champions... Toni Storm, Mariah May. It's a little congested right now and I don't want to come into a scene congested, and [get] lost in the shuffle, and I want to give those girls their spotlight because when I come to AEW, I'm beating the brakes off all these hussies, and they're not going to be able to stand toe-to-toe. So, if I'm the best kept secret, they should have been watching ROH," Athena said. [From 10:10 to 10:37]
Athena has had just one shot at gold in AEW. She unsuccessfully challenged then-champion Jade Cargill for the TBS Championship at All Out 2022.
