Former WWE Universal Champion apparently reached out to Sting for a "farewell thing"
A former WWE Universal Champion disclosed that he reached out to The Icon, Sting, to be part of his farewell. The Icon had a grand farewell from wrestling earlier this year.
The former WWE Universal Champion in question is Bill Goldberg. He has been away from the wrestling scene since his last match against Roman Reigns back at the Elimination Chamber 2022 PLE. He later departed the Stamford-based promotion and is still a free agent. He has also been rumored to sign with AEW.
Meanwhile, Goldberg disclosed that he never came close to making a deal with Tony Khan despite having talks. Furthermore, Bill also revealed that he once reached out to Sting to be a part of his farewell tour in AEW, but it didn't end up happening. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Goldberg revealed the following:
"I don't think I was ever close to making a deal with him. I think it was much more a realistic transition when Sting was involved. I reached out to Sting because I wanted to be a part. I thought he and I could do a farewell thing at some point together. But it wasn't about me. It was about Sting, and I could never overshadow anything that he does. But I don't want to convolute the waters. It would have been a nice crescendo, but it wasn't about me." [H/T: chrisvanvliet.com]
WWE Hall of Famer believes Sting could return to AEW
Sting received a grand farewell at the AEW Revolution pay-per-view earlier this year, teaming with Darby Allin in his final match against The Young Bucks. However, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross claimed in his Grilling JR podcast that All Elite fans could see The Icon in some other role later:
"I don't know whether we have seen the last of Sting or not. I think we have as a wrestler. But I can see him in another role at some point in time if it fits, but not to force it on anybody because he retired. I believe those retirements should mean something," JR stated.
Henceforth, only time will tell if The Icon will ever consider returning to AEW television for a non-wrestling role in the future.
