"He lets the boys do whatever they want" - WWE veteran says Tony Khan is not a control freak like Vince McMahon (Exclusive)
AEW CEO Tony Khan is known for giving creative freedom to his talent and WWE veteran Vince Russo has compared the situation to Vince McMahon's creative direction. McMahon is the former President and head booker of WWE.
In 2022, Vince McMahon stepped down as the President and Head Booker of WWE and it was seen as one of the most shocking moves in history. McMahon was famous for being controlling of the talent and forcing them to do things his way. Former WWE head writer, Vince Russo recently recalled McMahon's nature of controlling talent while speaking about how AEW CEO Tony Khan approaches the situation.
In the recent edition of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws podcast with Dr. Chris Featherstone, Vince Russo called McMahon a control freak and noted how Tony Khan lets the AEW stars do whatever they want. Russo pointed out that Vince McMahon and Tony Khan's approaches were wrong and explained how he gave ideas to the talent and let them implement their direction, which improved the product.
"Bro, it's almost like, definitely with Vince [McMahon], when Vince was there, you went from one extreme to another. Vince was a total control freak. And from everything I hear about AEW, he lets the boys do whatever they want to do. Neither one of those work, Chris, you really need a happy medium. I found that happy medium was me working with the boys and making it a two way street. I would give them something and then they would come back to it with their touches and we would make sure that it was just the best possible segment." [7:11 - 7:55]
Konnan slams Tony Khan's AEW booking decision
Tony Khan introduced the Continental Classic Tournament last year. It produced some of the best matches in the promotion and the tournament has returned this year. However, WCW veteran Konnan has shared his honest thoughts on the tournament.
In a recent edition of the Keepin' It 100 podcast, Konnan claimed that the Continental Classic and the Continental Championship are meaningless and nobody cares about them.
"It's just another meaningless belt nobody cares about....or tournament in a place that's full of belts and tournaments. I agree 100 percent with what you said," he said. [1:29 - 1:46]
We will have to wait and see which star wins the Continental Classic tournament this year.
