Major AEW star recalls receiving WWE return offer after apologizing to Triple H
AEW star Billy Gunn had a fallout with WWE and Triple H back in 2004, leading to his release. However, he eventually reconciled with the global juggernaut's management.
Gunn joined WWE in 1993, and after four years, he became a part of one of the most famous pro wrestling stables of all time, D-Generation X. In 2004, he was released from his contract, after which he heavily criticized the promotion and The Game.
On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Billy Gunn opened up about his mistakes and disclosed that he apologized to Triple H for his seemingly inappropriate behavior.
“There was a ton of wreckage that I left in the wake, you know. I happened to be doing an appearance in Chicago; I think it was weird, and WWE was there. I called Hunter [Triple H], and I said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I stop by?’ And he goes, ‘Of course not. You can come by.’ Whatever. Because when I got released, I went on a rampage. I mean an utter rampage of just trying to destroy everything because it was everybody else’s fault and not mine.”
Gunn further recalled Triple H's reaction to his apology and discussed returning to the Stamford-based promotion.
“And he [Triple H] goes, ‘You know, I never even thought twice about it (...) The next thing you know, I was hired, and nobody knew it, and then the next thing you know, they put me and Brian [James] back on the road, and I was coaching and I was hired there and I was hired to go do talent.” [H/T: ewrestlingnews]
Why was Billy Gunn absent from D-Generation X's reunion on WWE RAW in 2022?
On the October 10, 2022, edition of Monday Night RAW, D-Generation X celebrated its 25th anniversary. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Road Dogg, and X-Pac were present on the show. However, Billy Gunn did not join his long-time allies for the reunion.
On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Gunn revealed that he couldn't attend the stable's 25th-anniversary celebration on RAW because he was signed to AEW and Tony Khan didn't allow him to appear on the program. Khan seemingly prevented the Hall of Famer from showing up on the red brand because WWE refused to acknowledge All Elite Wrestling on its programming.
