Major AEW stars make generous donations after former champion suffers a horrific injury
The world of AEW and WWE are coming together today to support one of their own. The fan-favorite underwent emergency surgery this past weekend after suffering a devastating injury mid-match. One major positive from the unfortunate incident is how wrestling stars from every promotion have donated to help with expenses, including one hefty contribution from a certain authority figure.
Chris Bey suffered a neck injury at Sunday's TNA Impact tapings in Detroit. While ABC's Bey and Ace Austin were facing World Tag Team Champions Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy, Matt's neckbreaker to Chris was botched. Fans in attendance recalled the star's neck landing on Hardy's shoulder, apparently due to bad timing. The scene was described as "really scary," with fans reporting that Bey was talking but not moving and then stretchered away in a neck brace.
The Ultimate Finesser was reportedly taken right to the hospital to undergo neck surgery, and sources added that he was recovering as of Monday morning. Hours later, TNA confirmed that Chris Bey was recovering in the hospital after surgery and an MRI earlier that day. Bey was in good spirits and joking around about Bound For Glory with friends and family in his hospital room last night.
One of Bey's friends has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the Virginia native recover without the financial stress, according to the fundraiser description. As of Tuesday at around 5:20 pm ET, they had raised $49,111 of a $50,000 goal with 328 donations.
Nine minutes later, they had raised $51,431 off 367 donations, and the goal was changed to $60,000. The wrestling world is clearly supporting Bey in a major way.
As of this writing, former TNA Wrestling President Scott D'Amore has donated $5,000. One anonymous donor made a $4,000 donation, while Matt Hardy and Karrion Kross donated $3,000 each. Chris Jericho gave $2,500, and Cody Rhodes and Nic Nemeth each gave $2,000.
Several stars gave $1,000 each: Matt Cardona, Will Ospreay, QT Marshall, Jinder Mahal, plus Jordynne Grace and Jonathan Gresham as a couple. Mercedes Moné donated $888, while the following donated $500 each: Brody King, Delirious, Roderick Strong, Shane Helms, Kyle O'Reilly, Natalya, and Joe Hendry. The last name on the Top Donors list as of this writing is Chris Sabin, who has donated $300.
Chris Bey is staying in Detroit for a few days, along with family that joined him, plus TNA officials and talents that were staying in The Motor City. TNA stated that Bey is under professional supervision and care and that local healthcare workers are in contact with his doctor back home.
