Mastermind behind Paul Wight's (fka The Big Show) iconic gimmick's debut in AEW revealed

Former WWE World Champion Paul Wight (fka The Big Show) debuted a gimmick in AEW a few years ago, and the mastermind behind that has been revealed. The star, Anthony Bowens, himself disclosed on social media how it all came together.

Paul Wight signed a deal with AEW in 2021 after a legendary career in WWE and WCW. Although he does not wrestle too often, he has been a part of the commentary team several times. His last match took place at the Jericho Cruise event in January 2024 in a trios match.

Meanwhile, current AEW star Anthony Bowens took to X and recalled the debut of an iconic gimmick portrayed by Paul Wight two years ago. During a backstage promo, Wight played the role of "Captain Insano" while recreating a scene from the popular movie The Waterboy.

Bowens disclosed that he had the idea of recreating the scene after Wight signed with Tony Khan's promotion. The former WWE World Champion was down for the it as well.

"The second @PaulWight signed with AEW, I had the idea to recreate the Captain Insano scene from The Waterboy in one of The Acclaimed’s music videos. We just needed the right opportunity and opponents. It finally came 2 years ago today and thankfully Paul was completely down for the idea. Thank you to everyone involved. ✂️"

Paul Wight's (fka The Big Show) last appearance in AEW

As mentioned earlier, Paul Wight (fka The Big Show) has not been quite active in the ring since his AEW debut. The legend has wrestled only seven matches in Tony Khan's promotion. Nonetheless, Wight has joined the commentary team to offer his services quite often.

He last appeared in All Elite Wrestling while on the commentary desk during the Battle of the Belts XI show in July. It was Wight's only appearance as a commentator in the year 2024.

Only time will tell what's next for the former Big Show in AEW.
