Matt Hardy urges Tony Khan to push two AEW stars - "People will lose faith in them"
The AEW roster comprises a strong mix of rookies, rising stars, and veterans. Matt Hardy recently left the company but was one of those senior voices in the locker room. The multi-time champion now offers some key advice to Tony Khan.
AEW has made several stars since launching in 2019. While names like MJF, Hangman Page, and Orange Cassidy had at least some value before joining the upstart promotion, their popularity only skyrocketed since becoming part of All Elite Wrestling. Two other grapplers whose careers have accelerated in AEW are Daniel Garcia and Wardlow. Hardy wants to see this trend continue.
Big Money Matt thinks Khan should put The Dragon Slayer and Mr. Mayhem into a position where they could draw big money. On the latest Extreme Life podcast, co-host Jon Alba said Garcia could benefit from WWE NXT like Ethan Page, as the 25-year-old still had several future options and potential. Matt then chimed in with his thoughts on Garcia and Wardlow, and advice for the AEW - ROH owner.
"Youth is on his side, no doubt about it. When DG was getting over with the audience and they were reacting in the building [...] When Wardlow was coming out and they were [chanting his name], you have to keep in mind these are people that have paid to get tickets. That is your core audience, those are the people you should be catering to. So, if fans are getting behind your grassroots, homemade guys [...] Wardlow and DG, that means it's time to move them and use them in the correct way," Matt Hardy said. [From 6:10 to 6:49]
Matt urged Khan to put the two homegrown stars in a position where they could draw big money. He felt it was the right time for a push for these popular stars who had a lot of potential but would lose the audience's interest if they kept languishing in the lower and mid cards. Matt urged the AEW owner to book them better going forward.
"Put them into a position to where they can draw money and be money-makers at the end of the day, and be made men, because that's what it's all about. If you do wait too long and you don't pull that trigger, then people lose faith in them. That's just the way things work. You really have to be able to have that feeling as a promoter, as a booker," Matt Hardy said. [From 6:50 to 7:05]
Garcia last wrestled at Beach Break on July 3, coming up short against then-International Champion, Will Ospreay in the main event. The injured Wardlow has not wrestled since losing to then-World Champion, Samoa Joe on March 13 in the Big Business opener.
