Mercedes Mone reveals top WWE Superstar was almost in tears before wrestling her
Mercedes Mone has revealed that a top WWE Superstar was near tears before their match. These two women wrestled each other on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
Before arriving in AEW, Mercedes wrestled for WWE under the ring name, Sasha Banks. During her time with the Stamford-based promotion, she was instrumental in putting the women's division on the map. She was part of several memorable and historic matches for the company.
One of those bouts came at WrestleMania 37 when she wrestled Bianca Belair in the main event of Night One. This was also the first time that two black women were main eventing The Show of Shows.
During an interview with WTOP, Mercedes Mone recollected her match with The EST of WWE, main eventing WrestleMania 37. She also mentioned how it had been her lifelong dream to be where she was, adding to the fact that they were creating history. The grandeur of the occasion got to Belair who was close to tears, recalled The CEO, also admitting that she herself wasn't far behind.
"It was so emotional. That was one of my biggest dreams since I was 10 years old, but it was so big I didn’t think it was possible, then here I was at WrestleMania 37 in the middle of the ring looking at Bianca [Belair] like, wow, we are doing this. This is so much bigger than us, bigger than wrestling. That moment was so special. The way she looked at me, I was like, girl, you better stop before I start bawling and we slip in the ring from our tears," she said. [H/T: Post Wrestling]
Mercedes Mone spoke about her history with Charlotte Flair
During her tenure with WWE, Mercedes Mone would encounter several of the company's top stars. One of the women she faced off against was Charlotte Flair.
During the same interview, Mone spoke about her history with Flair, saying the latter brought the best out of The CEO, and how their rivalry had put women's pro wrestling on the map.
"It meant a lot because I started out with Charlotte in 2012 and I remember being in developmental with her. With that last name of Flair, I was like, ‘Just because you’re a Flair, you’re not me…’ Having that feud with Charlotte was such an amazing experience. I really feel like it helped put women’s wrestling on the map and she pushed me to new heights that I’ve never been before in the ring, so I had an incredible feud with her," she said.
