Mick Foley says current AEW star should have been given a world title run in WWE
WWE legend Mick Foley recently claimed that a top AEW star should have become a world champion in WWE. The star being discussed is Claudio Castagnoli (fka Cesaro). The former Hardcore Champion is known for his brutal matches and had world championship reigns in the Attitude Era.
The Swiss Superman is known for his strength and techniques. Despite being under-pushed in WWE, he used to outshine his opponents with incredible wrestling skills. He had been giving a massive push in the Stamford-based promotion before he departed the company in 2022. Following his release, he debuted in All Elite Wrestling on June 26, 2022.
Since signing with AEW, Claudio Castagnoli had stellar matches alongside Blackpool Combat Club and currently holds the AEW World Trios Championships. He is also a former ROH World Champion and has won an International Grand Prix in the last couple of years. Fans have been enjoying his run in the promotion so far.
While speaking with Monopoly Events, Mick Foley stated that the 43-year-old star should have been a world champion in WWE. The Hall of Famer compared the latter's career to his and claimed he had shorter world title reigns in the Stamford-based promotion.
"I held the title three times for a total of 42 days — like I was the transitional champion. I'm glad I had it, but I don't think I'd be thinking of my career as any lesser if I'd never held it. Cesaro should have been given a run with the title that's because Cesaro reminded me of like the old school Jack Brisco, Dory Funk, traveling champion who could literally have a good match with anyone," he said. WWE veteran claims Mick Foley wasn't worried about taking a fall
In the 1998 King of the Ring event, the Hall of Famer squared off with The Undertaker. During this match, The Deadman threw Foley from the top of the cage.
While speaking on the Wrestling Time Machine, Teddy Long claimed that Mick Foley wasn't afraid to take the iconic fall from the cell.
"People didn't understand, Mick started in that backyard wrestling. Really they were slamming each other on garbage cans, tables on the ground, everywhere. So he wasn't worried about that fall... I mean, you gotta come at a distance, but when you land, you land. So, just congratulations to him, man, he certainly made that match," Long said.
It remains to be seen if the Hall of Famer ever appears in AEW.
