"Not a good decision" - AEW seemingly makes a dangerous mistake with Chris Jericho, feels WWE veteranĀ (Exclusive)
WWE veteran Vince Russo claims AEW is making a mistake with Chris Jericho. The Learning Tree leader is the current ROH World Champion.
The former WWE star has been receiving criticism and go-away heat from fans for some time in AEW. However, Chris Jericho manages to use that heat against the fans as seen in his recent Learning Tree persona. The gimmick brought Jericho the FTW Championship and also his second Ring of Honor World Championship after defeating Mark Briscoe a couple of weeks ago on Dynamite.
In a recent edition of Sportskeeda's exclusive Writing with Russo podcast, Vince Russo noted how Chris Jericho has managed to stay in great shape even at 54. However, he wasn't fond of the veteran being pushed for championship gold in AEW and compared the situation to WCW, when the promotion put Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan in the main event.
"I saw some current pictures of him online and bro, he looks like a 54-year-old man. He's in great shape for a 54-year-old man but, he still looks like a 54-year-old man. Bro I remember when I went to WCW, before I got there, [Hulk] Hogan and [Ric] Flair were still in the main event, and it looked like crap. I knew I had to protect these guys from themselves and you know man, Chris Jericho has a heart of a lion, he's a great performer, he's a great entertainer."
The former WWE head writer explained how one's body can't perform at a certain level when they get older and claimed that putting the Ring of Honor World Championship on Jericho wasn't a good decision.
"But bro, when you're 54, you just can't do the things your mind is telling your body to do certain things that it can not do anymore. So, I would just think, at 54 years old it's probably not a good decision to put the title on him." [1:23 - 2:20]
Chris Jericho is the first-ever AEW World Champion
AEW began its journey in 2019 and Chris Jericho was one of the first big stars to jump ship from WWE to Tony Khan's promotion. All Elite Wrestling needed a big name like Jericho on board and it helped make them a notable promotion in the United States.
At the inaugural All Out PPV event from Chicago, Chris Jericho defeated Hangman Adam Page to become the first-ever AEW World Champion. Y2J would go on to hold the title for 182 days before dropping it to Jon Moxley in 2020.
We will have to wait and see which star defeats Chris Jericho for the ROH World Championship.
