Only one star can match CM Punk's promos and he is not even in WWE, claims former writer
CM Punk has seemingly had the time of his life since joining WWE. He is currently embroiled in a heated feud with Drew McIntyre. However, regarding his promos, Freddie Prinze Jr. felt only MJF was on the same level as Punk in the business today.
After his unceremonious exit from AEW, CM Punk unexpectedly returned to WWE at last year's WWE Survivor Series: WarGames PLE. While CM Punk might not have wrestled as much as he'd like to he is involved in a high-profile story with Drew McIntyre on RAW.
Ahead of their Hell in a Cell match at WWE Bad Blood, CM Punk delivered a fiery promo to his rival, promising to leave no stone unturned in defeating him. Freddie Prinze Jr. was stunned by Punk's work and, on his podcast Wrestling with Freddie, said no one could compete with The Second City Saint on the microphone, barring MJF.
Prinze Jr. explained that Maxwell was the only star currently who could consistently deliver similarly effective promos as WWE's CM Punk. Thankfully for wrestling fans, AEW booked a feud between CM Punk and MJF, producing memorable back-and-forth promos between the stars.
"CM Punk's worst promo is a nine on a scale of one to ten. His medium promo is a ten out of ten. And when he is awesome, there is no promo that can really hang with him. He is in a rare air. And there is like one other guy who can do that and that's Max (MJF). He has done it multiple times." [From 18:12 to 18:35]

Former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. on the issue with MJF and Will Ospreay's recent AEW feud
While he spoke highly of MJF's skills on the mic, Freddie Prinze Jr. felt the former AEW World Champion didn't have the same performances during his program with Will Ospreay.
Ospreay and MJF battled for the International Championship at AEW All In, and Freddie Prinze Jr. initially hoped they'd have a more extended feud. MJF and Will Ospreay have wrestled two matches in AEW, but Prinze clearly wanted more from the duo. In the same episode of Wrestling with Freddie, he said:
"He didn't do it, I didn't think, with the Will Ospreay thing, although it was a cool story. I just wished it would have gone on longer, they could have told a longer story. But he has done it as well." [From 18:38 to 18:46]
MJF is currently on a hiatus after AEW All Out, where he defeated Daniel Garcia but was taken out via an unforgiving attack after the match by his opponent.
