Shane McMahon can become the new commissioner of AEW if he joins hands with Tony Khan, says veteran (Exclusive)
A certain wrestling veteran believes that Shane McMahon could end up in a prominent role in AEW if he can reach an agreement with Tony Khan. This would be Bill Apter.
Photos from a reported meeting between Khan and McMahon surfaced earlier today, prompting heavy speculation that the two were about to work together. No specific details regarding their encounter have been disclosed, so it is mostly rumors at this point.
During the latest episode of Rings and Rambles, Sportskeeda Senior Editor Bill Apter was asked whether Shane McMahon should come to AEW as in-ring talent. He dismissed the idea, saying the WWE veteran should instead focus on being a backstage figure with Tony Khan and Christopher Daniels and occasionally address the crowd.
"No, if he was doing this, I'd like him to come out and open the show 'Welcome to AEW,' and already now he's made that impact, even if that's the name of another show. Already he's made himself known there and he can be the commissioner... He can work with Christopher Daniels and Tony Khan, this type of thing." [13:55-14:24]
Apart from his sporadic appearances, Apter believed that Shane McMahon's experience in other business areas would also be helpful for the promotion.
"I think Shane would be more valuable for the coming out once or twice during a show... I think that backstage and business-wise in terms of the wrestling business; he would be the most valuable commodity they can get," the veteran noted. [20:17-20:35]
WWE Hall of Famer believes Shane McMahon and Tony Khan could already be thinking of working together
On a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray talked about how the meeting between Shane McMahon and Tony Khan was not about him being brought in as in-ring talent but for collaboration in other areas.
The veteran mentioned how McMahon's job gave him some connections overseas, which could be the topic of their conversation.
"Shane, I forget exactly what Shane does for a living, but it's very, very detached from pro wrestling, and I believe he does a lot of his business overseas. Maybe the business meeting is about how Shane's company can help AEW overseas and break into a different market, because I believe Shane was working on a big deal with China for the WWE," Ray said.
It remains to be seen whether this partnership will become official and what specific arrangements they will have.
