Sting tried to talk AEW star out of taking major decision - "He knows that I really want to do it"
Sting hung up his wrestling boots at this year's AEW Revolution pay-per-view, but the legendary star is still trying to look out for his friends in the business. His protege, Darby Allin, recently revealed that The Icon had tried to talk him out of climbing Mount Everest.
Darby Allin was set to climb Everest earlier this year, but a broken foot put his plans on hold. He's now determined to climb next year, and nothing seems to stop him—not even Sting.
During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, the face-painted star was asked if Sting had any reservations about Darby climbing the mountain, and the latter confirmed that his mentor had tried to talk him out of it:
"He’s tried but he knows that I really want to do it. He’s like, ‘Alright man, if you’re on a vision quest and you want to do something, go do it.’"
Darby then revealed how important the climb was to him:
"To me, climbing Mount Everest, there’s so many things that go into it. It’s a journey because when you’re climbing a mountain like that, you don’t have the energy to talk like we have right now, like we’re talking back and forth. You can’t waste that energy, so you’re just alone with your thoughts on this mountain for essentially two months. I feel like that’s a very humbling experience and I want to always dig down deep inside and remind myself of what I’m capable of and who I am. I’m very excited for that opportunity and very grateful that AEW is letting me do this in the middle of my career." [H/T: Fightful]
Sting predicted that Darby Allin would become AEW World Champion in 2025
Darby Allin has had a lot of weight on his shoulders ever since Sting retired. The 31-year-old has been hailed as the future of All Elite Wrestling, and many are expecting him to lift the promotion's World Championship in the near future.
Sting thinks that it will happen next year. At the recent press conference for AEW All In: Texas, The Icon predicted that his former tag team partner would become World Champion in 2025, potentially at All In itself:
"You [Darby Allin], I’ve always known from day one, you are World Championship caliber," said The Icon. "I knew from the very beginning. Yeah, you had to come up some, and you’ve come up a ton in the last few years. But I knew that you would someday become the World Heavyweight Champion. Sometime in 2025, I am predicting this is the future AEW World Champion right here. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be World Champion at Globe Life [Field], 2025, at All In."
Sting may have retired from active competition, but he's still signed with All Elite Wrestling and has said that he'll be making more appearances for the young promotion in the future. Whether he plays a part in his protege becoming the World Champion remains to be seen.
