"They told me this" - Konnan makes shocking backstage revelation about AEW President Tony Khan
Tony Khan has often been under scrutiny for some of the decisions he has made in AEW. Now, Konnan has revealed backstage details some of the talent have told him about the AEW boss.
Since the start of AEW, Tony Khan has worn many hats in the company. He handles contract negotiations, does press conferences, and even books the matches for all the shows every week.
While the AEW boss' work ethic is commendable, he has oftentimes been criticized for some of the decisions he has made. Lately, Tony has been criticized for the way he booked MJF and Adam Cole's rivalry. This rivalry had to be stopped for a bit since both men were out of action for a while. During this, Maxwell had a brief feud with Daniel Garcia that ended abruptly after Cole recovered from his injury.
Although their feud is back on now, it seems to have lost the momentum it had a year ago. Speaking on a recent episode of Keepin' It 100 Official, Konnan addressed MJF's recent booking decisions, and he also revealed that several talents in the company have claimed that nobody backstage says "no" to Tony since he signs their checks. He said that they just do whatever the boss tells them.
"Let me tell you something and this is a fact. I know a lot of people, backstage staff and wrestlers. Okay. A lot of things that we see on TV, they just let Tony....bro, Tony's paying you $5 million, $4 million, $3 million, are you going to fight with the guy when he says, 'Hey I want you to go against Daniel Garcia?' So a lot of wrestlers just, 'all right, whatever you want, Tony, whatever you want,' even if it's dumb, even if they don't like it. That's why you see a lot of stuff that makes you scratch your head. I'm serious, bro, because they told me this." [2:25 - 3:05]
Tony Khan has some big plans for AEW
Since its inception, AEW has been a major player in the wrestling industry and has provided an alternative for fans who were tired of the WWE product. The company even secured a massive new TV deal with Warner Bros. Discovery this year.
The company is also breaking ground by doing shows in new arenas and countries every year. It started with All In London, and it looks like Tony Khan has plans to expand to more countries.
During an interview with Q101 Chicago, Tony Khan revealed that he wants to host an AEW show in Mexico from the infamous Arena Mexico.
"I can't wait to eventually bring AEW for the first time ever to Mexico. Sooner or later, absolutely, it has to happen. If I can go anywhere in Mexico and work with anyone, I would love to go to Arena Mexico and work with CMLL. I think Salvador would be open to having us there." [H/T @DrainBamager on X/Twitter]
It will be interesting to see if Tony Khan will be able to accomplish this plan of hosting a show in Mexico.
