Tony Khan announces unexpected Forbidden Door opponent for MJF

AEW President Tony Khan has officially announced a huge cross-promotional match for MJF at Forbidden Door 2024. The challenge was made on this week's episode of Dynamite.

Maxwell Jacob Friedman made his blockbuster return after months at the 2024 Double or Nothing pay-per-view. He later engaged in a feud with Rush, culminating in a grudge match on the latest edition of Dynamite. It marked the in-ring return of the former AEW World Champion after nearly six months.

The 28-year-old prevailed over Rush in a hard-hitting bout. After the match, The Salt of the Earth was interrupted by Brian Cage and Gates of Agony. The group informed Friedman that CMLL legend Hechicero wanted to face him at Forbidden Door in Long Island, New York.

After the show, Tony Khan took to X/Twitter to officially announce Maxwell Jacob Friedman vs. Hechicero for Forbidden Door. He wrote:

"@The_MJF vs @_ReyHechicero It's official for Forbidden Door live on June 30! MJF has accepted the challenge of Hechicero!"

Hechicero has made multiple appearances in All Elite Wrestling this year and will compete in his first pay-per-view match for the promotion on June 30. While fans worldwide are excited to witness the contest, very few expected the CMLL legend to face The Salt of the Earth.

AEW potentially planted seeds for MJF's next big feud

On the latest edition of AEW Dynamite, Maxwell Jacob Friedman assisted Daniel Garcia after the latter was attacked by Gates of Agony, Brian Cage, and Hechicero. Will Ospreay also joined the brawl and eventually had a massive confrontation with Friedman.

During the exchange, AEW and Tony Khan seemingly planted the seeds for a huge dream match between The Salt of the Earth and Ospreay. It remains to be seen when the two stalwarts will lock horns inside the ring.
