Tony Khan seemingly gives Chris Jericho a new name after ROH Final Battle 2024
AEW CEO Tony Khan has given an interesting nickname to Chris Jericho. The Learning Tree is the current ROH World Champion.
Ring of Honor held the Final Battle PPV from Hammerstein Ballroom last night. The show had some great matches including AEW star Chris Jericho successfully defending his ROH World Championship against Matt Cardona. Y2J is no stranger to making memorable entrances and he did so before the match against Cardona. The Learning Tree entered the arena while being played by Frank Sinatra to the squared circle.
At the post-ROH Final Battle PPV press conference, Tony Khan was asked about obtaining the rights for Sinatra's music for Jericho's entrance. Khan labeled Jericho as the 'King of New York' and put over the veteran. He called it a special moment and explained why the song was needed for Jericho's entrance.
"For the King of New York, I thought it would be appropriate. Chris Jericho is the King of New York, so what better way for him to come to the ring for his championship match than ‘New York, New York.’ I thought it would be something special and it came out great. It was a great part of the presentation. Since we all woke up in a city that never sleeps, we all wanted to play that song. It was a great moment and something special for Final Battle." Chris Jericho reveals Matt Cardona is not signed to AEW
Matt Cardona first appeared in AEW in 2020 and had a brief run. He returned to the promotion earlier this year to face Adam Copeland for the TNT Title. The Indy God recently answered Chris Jericho's challenge for the ROH World Title a couple of weeks ago.
Before the ROH Final Battle PPV, The Learning Tree appeared on the Busted Open Radio to promote his match with Cardona. The veteran confirmed that The Indy God is not signed to All Elite Wrestling and noted how the fans haven't seen what he's capable of:
"Just the fact that we are doing this is special. The fact that it's in Hammerstein, with the vibe that is expected. I don't think anybody expected Matt Cardona to answer this challenge. He's not an AEW regular. We haven't seen him a whole lot," he said. [H/T: Fightful]
Chris Jericho defeated Matt Cardona at the ROH Final Battle PPV. After the match, Bandido made his surprising return which could mean that he's next in line to challenge Jericho for the ROH World Title.
