Veteran explains why Mercedes Moné reportedly having creative control in AEW is necessary (Exclusive)
AEW star Mercedes Moné's recent comments about her power over her in-ring character have turned quite a few heads recently. According to a veteran though, this was a necessary step on her part.
In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Mercedes was asked about her current run in the Jacksonville-based promotion. Her response came as a surprise to many, with her claiming that she had creative control over her on-screen character due to how close she works with Tony Khan.
On Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine hosted by Mac Davis, Bill Apter was asked about what he thought of the matter. While many have criticized this as a misstep on Tony Khan's part, the veteran journalist supported the AEW star.
"Ya, because they may, she may think that that is the best for her, seeing what's happened creatively to a lot of their other talent. I think it's a gret idea, she's branching out. She is going on talk shows, she has got some TV appearances coming up outside of wrestling. She is becoming like a franchise player. I think because of her experience in WWE, and the years in Japan, she pretty much knows where her character should be going, and she doesn't want anybody to eff around with it." [10:52 onwards]
WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long did not agree with Bill Apter about Mercedes Moné's power in AEW
While Bill Apter supported Mercedes Moné having creative control, Teddy Long believes this was a bad decision.
On the same episode of The Wrestling Time Machine, the WWE Hall of Famer stated that this would lead to Mercedes being selfish in terms of storylines. In response to being asked whether it was okay for the AEW star to have creative control in AEW, he stated:
"No. Not at all. And the reason I say that is because once you've got creative control, you basically think about nobody but yourself. And that's not how it's supposed to be, you gotta think about all of your talent. It's good to include yourself, but you gotta hold another bunch of people, girls guys back there that are looking for the same thing. So I think putting a wrestler in charge of creative control is, that's just not the right thing to do." [11:33 onwards]
As of now, it remains to be seen how the feud between the CEO and Britt Baker pans out in the coming weeks.
