Wrestling legend claims Ric Flair once asked security to kick him out of a WWE show
The WWE Universe widely views Ric Flair as one of the most controversial, and yet greatest pro wrestlers of all time. The 16-time World Champion has had rivalries with many colleagues on-screen and behind the scenes, and now one veteran star who idolized Flair is opening up on a backstage incident.
The Nature Boy made his name by wrestling around the world, beginning in 1972. His first reign with the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship began in September 1981, and almost a full 10 years later he was debuting with WWE in August 1991 for a run that ended in February 1993. Just over one year after Flair signed with WWE, another future WCW United States Champion was debuting for Vince McMahon, Konnan. He arrived in September 1992 and was done before the month was over.
The former Max Moon recalled meeting The Dirtiest Player In The Game at a NWA show, and then again at a WWE event, where he was caught off-guard by Flair's greeting. The 37-year industry veteran then revealed how Flair asked security to eject him and AAA founder Antonio Peña, not realizing they were invited by Pat Patterson and Vince McMahon. ECW Original, Louie Spicolli relayed the story to Konnan.
"I went with my boss [AAA founder] Antonio Peña, and he [Flair] was like, 'How you doing, sir?,' to me, and I was like, 'Sir? You're older than me.' It just seemed very disingenuous. Then later on, he told security to kick us out of the building, not knowing Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson had invited us there. Louie Spicolli actually told me, and I was like, 'Wow, that's kind of messed up,'" Konnan said. [From 5:36 to 6:09]
K-Dawg continued and admitted how he idolized Flair as a kid. The 60-year-old also gave his thoughts on Flair's recent work and how it's impacted his legacy.
"I can tell you other stuff but I always had respect for him because I grew up idolizing him, because he was so charismatic, and he was great, and I think he gets away with a lot of stuff because he's Ric Flair. I do think the last few years have not been kind to his legacy," Konnan said. [From 6:10 to 6:28]
The first and only Flair vs. Konnan singles bout took place at WCW's legendary Bash at The Beach 1996 event. Flair captured the United States Championship in just under 16 minutes, thanks to Miss Elizabeth and Woman.
WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair reflects on his life
Ric Flair recently parted ways with AEW after less than a year with the company. The Nature Boy seems to be in good spirits despite the departure and reflected on his life on social media today.
Flair took to X (fka Twitter) this morning to share a clip from his 2002 interview with Michael Landsberg on TSN Off The Record, where he commented on not living another 30 years. The 75-year-old tweeted that he never thought he'd make it this far.
"I Never Thought I Would Make It This Far. I Have Been Extremely Blessed Throughout My Life. A+ Health & Still Going Strong! Here’s To Another 30 Years! WOOOOO!," Ric Flair wrote.
Flair was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by himself in 2008, and as a Four Horseman in 2012. The NWA inducted him in 2008.
