WWE and ECW legend expresses desire to face Matt Cardona in a deathmatch
Matt Cardona is currently performing in TNA and has caught the interest of a legendary wrestler due to his extreme style. The WWE and ECW icon has expressed his desire to return to the ring for a match against Cardona.
That wrestler is ECW legend Sabu. In an interview with Conversations with The Wrestling Classic, Sabu said he'd like to have a deathmatch with Matt Cardona and stated a match with RVD would be too predictable and easy.
“If all else fails, [I’ll face] Van Dam, but to me, that’s too predictable. It’s too easy. Of course, we’re going to have a great match. I want something else. Maybe Matt Cardona in an explosion match when the time is right. Maybe not January, but down the line more.”H/T: PWMania.com]

Matt Cardona has had some great stints and is most famous for his run in WWE as Zack Ryder. He was with the Stamford-based company in 2005 and then returned to the roster in 2006. He was a part of WWE for around 15 years but parted ways with the promotion in 2020. The former Edgehead also had some matches in AEW in 2020 and 2024, where he worked with stars like Cody Rhodes and Adam Copeland (fka Edge).
The former WWE Intercontinental Champion's last match in AEW was in March this year, and he accepted Copeland's open challenge for the TNT Championship, which he lost. He currently performs in TNA.
Sabu has been discussing his final match and reflected on the possibility of it being in AEW.
Matt Cardona hints at a WWE return
Cardona recently hinted at a return to WWE with a social post.
The current Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes announced that the next opponents for Trick Williams, the current NXT Champion, will be decided in a Battle Royal Match, and the participants could be from different locker rooms. Cardona replied to the snippet of Rhode's quote on X (formerly Twitter) with a picture of himself.
Whether Sabu's ambition to face Cardona comes true or whether the former Zack Ryder returns to WWE remains to be seen.
