Rey Mysterio to officially retire after losing to rumored new WWE signee? Exploring the possibility

WWE honored Rey Mysterio last year with a Hall of Fame induction. The masked superstar could be retiring from in-ring competition in the near future, and that means decisions are to be made on his final opponents. A potential dream match would see Mysterio go up against another major star rumored to sign with World Wrestling Entertainment.

The former WWE Champion is currently in his 35th year as a pro wrestler. Mysterio has led a legendary career, but one that has been marred by numerous injuries. After signing a new three-year contract with the Stamford-based promotion in late 2023, Rey admitted that he is slowing down in the ring. While the Hall of Famer is seemingly preparing for the end of his time in the ring, one 19-year veteran is rumored to be approaching the biggest point in his career - current AEW star Rey Fenix.

Sources recently reported that Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo are expected to leave AEW for WWE this year. The Lucha Bros have been with All Elite Wrestling since the beginning, and are the former World Tag Team Champions and World Trios Champions, with PAC.

Fenix is also a one-time International Champion. The high-flyers are rumored to have contracts that expire sometime between August and September, and word is that signing with WWE is only a formality at this point.

Rey vs. Rey could be a big first-time-ever match in WWE and an even bigger attraction as one of Mysterio's final matches. The masked grapplers worked 25 multi-man matches together from 2015 - 2018, but they have never had a one-on-one battle. With rumors of a future main roster PLE in Mexico, which could feature an epic final match for The Ultimate Underdog, a Mysterio vs. Fenix bout would be a logical main event option.

Mysterio stated a few years back that his main late-career goal was to share the ring with his son. Since then he has teamed with, and feuded against, Dominik Mysterio on several occasions and big events, including WrestleMania. WWE's 21st Triple Crown Champion and 21st Grand Slam Champion turned 49 last December and has previously said he considered retiring by age 50.

Rey Mysterio advertised for upcoming WWE event

Rey Mysterio has not wrestled on RAW since the July 8 episode. The main event that night saw Rey and Zelina Vega come up short against Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan.

There's no word on when The Master of the 619 will be back on WWE TV, but he is not currently advertised for any of the upcoming RAW tapings. However, the 2023 Hall of Famer is listed for the SmackDown on August 23 at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

Mysterio worked on both events on the mid-July tour of Mexico. He also wrestled on all three shows during the late-July tour of Japan.
