Backstage update on whether Mercedes Mone is behind Sammy Guevara’s demotion to ROH - Reports

A report has emerged on whether Mercedes Mone was responsible for Sammy Guevara's not returning to AEW. The 31-year-old star recently made his comeback to Tony Khan's ROH.

The Spanish God was suspended from the Jacksonville-based promotion in February 2024 for not following concussion protocols in a match against Jeff Hardy. While the suspension was lifted months ago, he didn't return to in-ring action until this week.

On the recent ROH tapings, Sammy returned after over five months to save Dustin Rhodes and take out Dark Order. In 2016, the former TNT Champion made some ill comments toward Mercedes, which resurfaced in 2020. Many believe the reason Guevara didn't return to Dynamite or Collision was due to The CEO's influence in AEW. Fans also thought that returning to ROH might be a demotion for him as he has been a former champion in the company.

However, a prominent journalist, Bryan Alvarez, from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, reported that Sammy coming back to the secondary company has nothing to do with the TBS Champion.

"I was told that him being on Ring of Honor has absolutely nothing to do with Mercedes (...) They did have a storyline for Sammy Guevara that would have brought him back to the main roster. (...) There was an aspect of the storyline that he was not cool with. I think it involved him turning heel and he didn't wanna turn heel. So they ended up coming up with a storyline where he's a babyface at Ring of Honor. So there were plans to bring him back to the main roster when Mercedes Mone was there and it didn't happen," Bryan said. (00:00 - 01:03)

Jose the Assistant thinks Sammy Guevara could be a "top player"

Jose the Assistant was released from AEW in April 2024 as a part of budget cuts. He managed Andrade El Idolo and La Facción Ingobernable during his stint.

Jose recently took to X/Twitter and claimed that the Spanish God could be a top star if he turned heel.

"I think @sammyguevara is a good promo if they allow him to speak, he doesn’t need a manager [in my opinion]. Incredible in-ring talent, very creative and if he had a heel run with @taymelo they can easily be top players in the company."

It will be interesting to see when Sammy Guevara will return to Dynamite or Collision.
