"He’s coming back to AEW" - Dave Meltzer issues update on a reported return
Veteran wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer provided a major update on the anticipated return of an AEW star in the coming future. The star has not been on TV since last year.
The star in question is none other than Kota Ibushi, who gained prominence during his time wrestling in Japan. He made his AEW debut last year at the Blood and Guts event and has competed in multiple TV and pay-per-view matches since then. Ibushi was last seen on the November 15, 2023, episode of Dynamite in a street fight.
Kota Ibushi teamed with Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, and Paul Wight (fka The Big Show) to defeat Brian Cage and The Don Callis Family. Amid his absence from TV, Ibushi has competed in two matches in Japan as well. Meanwhile, Ibushi hinted at a potential AEW return recently.
Now, Dave Meltzer has an update on Ibushi's return to Tony Khan's promotion as well. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted that Kota Ibushi would come back when Kenny Omega makes his TV return, which is uncertain as of now:
"He’s (Ibushi) coming back to AEW, basically when Kenny Omega returns he’s returning. I don’t know if there’s even a date for when Omega’s going to return, I don’t think it’s so far away as before… He’s getting better I know that." [H/T WOR]
Dave Meltzer provided an update on former AEW World Champion
Former All Elite World Champion Kenny Omega has been out of action for months due to 'diverticulitis.' Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio noted that Omega is expected to return by the end of this year:
“He's [Omega] getting better, I know that. He's been in the gym. He is coming back, that's pretty much the word. I don't think it's like months and months away. Just the vibe I have is it'll be before the end of the year.”
It remains to be seen if Omega will indeed make his anticipated return this year and whether Kota Ibushi will return alongside him.
