Latest on The Lucha Bros' status with AEW amid WWE rumors - Reports
Earlier today, a major report on the AEW contracts of the Lucha Bros surfaced. This talked about them potentially staying with the Jacksonville-based promotion for a longer time than previously expected. More information regarding this has come to light.
Previously, Penta and Rey Fénix were seemingly on their way out of the company and were waiting for their contracts to expire. However, both luchadors have injury time on their contracts that the company could add. Fénix's injury time is significantly higher as this could amount to around a year's worth, and as of today, this has been reportedly added. This means that he will be with the company for a while.
A new report from Fightful Select has clarified some information regarding the situation. The Lucha Bros hoped that the company would not tack on the injury time for Rey Fénix as they knew how much they could add. As of now, they are under contract and are being paid, but it remains to be seen whether AEW will ask them to appear on shows.
The motivations for this move by the promotion have not been disclosed apart from the company wanting them to fulfill the contracted time. Internally, the belief is that they may put talent over should they be asked to compete and make appearances on AEW shows before they officially leave the company.
The first of the Lucha Bros is set to leave in a couple of months
Both the luchadors have now had injury time added to their AEW contracts, but in the case of Penta, this is reportedly much shorter.
According to a recent report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Penta's contract ends in a couple of months. He has not officially signed with WWE and will do so only when his current contract ends. The Stamford-based promotion's lucrative offer and his frustrations with his current company are possible reasons for his leaving, according to the report.
"Penta’s AEW deal is up within the next two months. Officially, the story that has to be said is that he has not negotiated with WWE, but will do so when his AEW deal expires. The word is that WWE made him a competitive offer, so that solidified his decision to leave. There are a lot of reasons leading to his decision to leave, including frustration." [H/T - WON]
With the Lucha Bros set to remain with the company for a little while longer, this will surely be an awkward scenario should they be booked for some shows moving forward.
