Major concern over Malakai Black following AEW Double Or Nothing - Reports
AEW's sixth annual Double Or Nothing pay-per-view was held on Sunday in Las Vegas. The big event marked the company's 5th anniversary but unfortunately, things were not all positive as there was strong concern for Malakai Black after the show.
Black came up short against TNT Champion Adam Copeland in a Barbed Wire Steel Cage match at Double Or Nothing. The bloody brawl went just over 20 minutes and ended with a serious injury for the winner. Copeland retained his title but a loss would have forced him to bend the knee and join The House of Black.
There was concern for The Antihero backstage after the match due to the large amount of blood he lost, according to PWInsider. However, Black was said to be OK for the most part. The 39-year-old House of Black leader was described as being just really banged up and exhausted, which is expected after a grueling match like that.
It remains to be seen if Black will be booked on this week's AEW Dynamite, or if he will need a week or two off to heal up. The 22-year veteran could compete in the Casino Gauntlet to determine the #1 contender to World Champion Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door, where a major match is rumored.
Malakai Black's AEW contract status
Malakai Black's AEW future has been up in the air due to a contract situation, but news broke over Double Or Nothing Weekend that indicates he will be staying with the company for now.
WWE fans had been hoping for a potential return for the former Aleister Black, but the latest word from within AEW is that Black's contract likely had time added to it, perhaps for previous time missed. Backstage sources also reported that Black is now expected to stick around Tony Khan's company for at least a little while longer.
Black was signed to WWE from June 2016 - June 2021, and his wife Zelina Vega is under contract to the company now. He held the NXT Championship on one occasion. The 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winner, with partner Ricochet, became All Elite on July 7, 2021.
