MJF to likely feud with 3-time WWE champion after AEW Double or Nothing – Reports

AEW World Champion MJF is currently preparing for a huge title match at the upcoming Double or Nothing pay-per-view on May 28th, but who could his next potential feud be with?

On the May 17th edition of Dynamite, Maxwell Jacob Friedman had a tense backstage interaction with Renee Paquette, which saw The Salt of the Earth slapping the microphone out of Renee's hand.

Despite the drama that came from this backstage segment, this wasn't the original plan, as Dave Meltzer, in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, revealed that a tease for Adam Cole to be Max's next challenger was meant to be included.

“The segment where MJF slapped the mic out of Renee Paquette’s hands was not the original plan. There was a promo segment involving everyone in the match and Britt Baker was involved. It ended with Baker saying that even if he wins, he’s not going to hold the title long Bay Bay. The idea is that Cole gets the next big title chase against whoever wins the match. But there was something about it that was deemed not good and instead of doing it again, they changed to what they did.” (H/T WrestlePurists)
MJF here leaving Renee Paquette shocked/appalled was a great touch. You could cut the tension with a knife.

THIS is what separates her from everybody else in the broadcasting team. An important part on the show who adds so much to these segments. https://t.co/IHhon6jnT6

Meltzer also speculated that by teasing a feud with Adam Cole after the pay-per-view on May 28th, it would have given fans the impression that Max would be leaving Double or Nothing as champion, therefore spoiling the result.

MJF recently returned to his old stomping grounds

One of the main things that MJF outlined when he became the AEW World Champion was that he wasn't going to wrestle often due to him being a "special attraction" and a "generational talent."

However, The Salt of the Earth decided to make an exception recently when he made a surprise appearance at Create A Pro Wrestling's "Homecoming" event, the same company Friedman worked for when he first broke into the business.

The AEW World Champion confronted Leo Sparrow, who made the big mistake of telling the audience that he was better than them, and they know it, prompting The Salt of the Earth to interrupt and challenge Sparrow to a match. MJF won the match in just under 10 minutes.
