Original plans for Sting's retirement revealed; AEW made a big change - Reports
Wrestling legend Sting wrapped up his run with AEW at this year's Revolution pay-per-view. The event took place in a packed Greensboro Coliseum, but a new report has revealed that the company originally toyed with the idea of holding the big sendoff in a stadium.
The Icon won the AEW World Tag Team Championship with his partner, Darby Allin, early this year. The two defended the titles against The Young Bucks at Revolution in March, and The Stinger was joined by his two real-life sons as he said farewell to his in-ring career.
Many fans were ecstatic about the legend receiving such a massive sendoff, but it could have been even bigger. According to PWInsider, All Elite Wrestling considered holding Sting's retirement ceremony at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. Ultimately, the company decided to go with Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina, a venue with which The Icon has plenty of history.
AEW is heading to Globe Life Field in 2025
Although the company chose not to hold Sting's final match at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX, it will visit the stadium next summer. AEW announced earlier this year that the next edition of its massive All In pay-per-view will be held in the stadium.
Sting, who lives nearby in North Texas, could appear at the event, much like he did at this year's All In. However, many fans believe that Globe Life Field would be the perfect venue for Dustin Rhodes to compete in his final match.
The elder Rhodes brother is the reigning ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion alongside The Von Erichs, whose family is considered wrestling royalty in the Dallas area. A final team-up between the brothers and Dustin Rhodes could make for a huge main event, but whether that happens remains to be seen.
