Reported reason why AEW star lost his title to Matt Riddle

A budding talent from AEW recently lost his title to Matt Riddle at a wrestling show in Mexico. A report has now emerged citing a possible explanation for the star's defeat. This would be Komander.

The King of Bros returned to action in the independent circuit after being released by WWE in 2023. Riddle had a successful run in the Stamford-based company, including reigns with the US, NXT Tag Team, and RAW Tag Team Titles and a memorable pairing with Randy Orton as RK-Bro. Since his WWE exit, he has also thrived in the indies, where he won the NJPW World Television Championship during his recent stint in New Japan and now has a new title to add to his list of accolades.

At AAA TripleMania XXXII: Mexico City earlier this month, Matt Riddle defeated Laredo Kid and current AEW star Komander in a Three-Way match to become the new AAA World Cruiserweight Champion. Komander has been signed with the Tony Khan-led promotion since April of last year and has impressed audiences with his incredible high-flying prowess. He was also the defending champion in the Triple Threat bout at TripleMania on August 17.

Komander's title loss at the AAA event elicited an interesting update from veteran journalist Dave Meltzer. He speculated that AAA could have booked Matt Riddle to dethrone Komander because the latter is part of the AEW roster.

Meltzer's comment may have been informed by recent remarks made by Konnan, who has been outspoken in his criticism of AEW, Tony Khan and the collaboration the Mexico City-based promotion has shared with the latter.

"Matt Riddle winning at TripleMania was basically getting the AAA Cruiserweight belt off Komander because he's with AEW," stated Meltzer.

Matt Riddle recently opened up on the scariest moment of his WWE career

In the course of his five-year career in WWE, Matt Riddle was involved in several noteworthy spots and sequences.

During a recent interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, The Original Bro reflected on a segment from 2019 where he was subjected to a running senton through the stage in a post-match assault at the hands of Killian Dain on NXT, recalling his worry over the prospect of suffering an injury due to the spot.

"The scariest one where I thought I was gonna get injured the most had to have been when it was in NXT and they wanted Killian Dain to put me through the stage, but they didn't want him to suplex me or powerbomb me or anything like that. They wanted him to senton me through the stage while I was kneeling."

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Matt Riddle as he continues to ply his trade in the squared circle.
