Tony Khan forced to make huge modification to major AEW event - Reports

AEW President Tony Khan could have to make huge changes to a massive show. The event being discussed is none other than Grand Slam: Australia.

The Jacksonville-based promotion has been known for holding shows at Wembley Stadium back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024. Last year, it drew more than 80,000 crowds, while it filled more than 50,000 seats this year. Also, the next year's All In pay-per-view is set to take place at the Globe Life Stadium in Texas.

Amidst all these major achievements and announcements, AEW made another huge declaration. A few months ago, the company announced that it would be holding a major stadium show in Australia. Grand Slam Australia will be held on February 15, 2024, in Suncorp Stadium, which can hold more than 52,000 people.

As reported by Fightful, the event will likely take place at another location due to lower ticket sales. The official announcement regarding the pay-per-view is still to be made.

A wrestling journalist unsure about AEW ticket sales in Australia

Following the announcement of the Jacksonville-based promotion holding a stadium show in Australia, many veterans and critics were skeptical about how they would do in ticket sales.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, journalist Dave Meltzer wasn't confident that the promotion would sell many tickets for the Grand Slam Australia.

"The idea of going to a stadium (...) Man, they don’t have the viewership, they don’t have the popularity they do in the UK. It’s not even close. Maybe they’ll pull it off. I mean WWE pulled off three stadium shows, they were all successful. UFC pulled off stadium shows there. I don’t know, I’m skeptical of it," he said.

It will be interesting to see if the company moves to a smaller venue in Australia.
