Tony Khan reportedly found out about WWE's SmackDown plans for current AEW talent, delays exit
The latest media report suggested that AEW President Tony Khan delayed a top star's exit from his promotion after he found out about WWE's creative plan regarding the talent. The Triple H-led creative team reportedly had plans for the star on SmackDown.
The AEW talent in question is the former World Tag Team Champion, Rey Fenix. Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo of The Lucha Brothers were rumored to depart Tony Khan's promotion and head to WWE. However, their plan was halted, as Khan reportedly tucked in injury time on Fenix's contract, extending it to nearly a year.
Meanwhile, the latest report from WrestlePurists suggested the reason behind Tony adding injury time to Rey Fenix's contract. According to a recent report from WrestlePurists, Khan found out about WWE's rumored SmackDown plans for The Lucha Bros and tucked-in injury time of over nine months.
"Tony [Khan] likes Rey Fenix. He’s always liked and respected Rey Fenix. He just felt that if he let this thing slide, other people were going to start taking advantage of him, and it was going to lead to a dam breaking. So they’re f**ked, and Penta has another month, I believe, and Fenix has nine-10 [more months]. Tony found out what the plan was for them on SmackDown, by the way, and that also informed this," the report stated. [H/T: Cultaholic]
Veteran urged Tony Khan to use absent AEW stars
The Lucha Brothers last competed on AEW TV during the July 17, 2024, episode of Rampage.
Meanwhile, WCW veteran Konnan recently urged Tony Khan to use Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo before they leave. Speaking on his K100 OFFICIAL podcast, he said the following:
"Have you seen Pentagon and [Rey] Fenix like in the last month or so? They're still getting paid, bro. If you're gonna pay them that type of money, use them on the way out to put people over!''
Only time will tell if The Lucha Bros will show up on TV before their rumored exit from Tony Khan's promotion.
