“The Icon” Sting is one of the greatest professional wrestlers with a great wrestling career of almost four-decades. Sting is known for his time in Jim Crockett Promotions/World Championship Wrestling, where he worked for 14 years and is a 15 time champion there. He is also known for his time in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, where he worked for 11 years and is a 6 time champion there. Sting held a total of 26 championships throughout his career so far. He is currently signed to AEW. Although Sting stood in other wrestling promotions for a longer time, Sting’s time in WWE was so short. Here is what happened when Sting was in WWE.

What happened to Sting in WWE?

In 2001 after WWF purchased WCW, the company chose not to purchase Sting’s contract from AOL Time Warner. He rejected the 50 cents on the dollar from AOL Time Warner and waited till his contract expired in March 2002. After his contract expired, he had contract negotiations with WWE and declined the offer. It was later revealed that Sting didn’t like the way that the WCW wrestlers were treated in WWE. He took the example of Booker T & DDP, who joined WWE after purchase of WCW, who were disrespected in the initial stages. He declined the offers by WWE and chose smaller promotion WWA for a brief run and went to TNA in 2003.

In April 2014, Sting started appearing on WWE network in the documentary of The Ultimate Warrior, who had recently died. Sting continued to feature in the WWE 2K15 video game. In November 2014, Sting made his WWE debut at Survivor Series.

Following which Cena came to the aid of Sting and resulted in a tag team match. Where John Cena and Sting defeated Seth Rollins & Big Show by submission. Sting had his final match in WWE at 2015 Night of Champions pay-per-view against Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, where Seth Rollins retained the championship by defeating sting.

In 2016, Sting was inducted into WWE Hall of Fame and announced his retirement. He expressed his desire to face Undertaker in a cinematic match, which never happened. He left the company in 2020 stating WWE “wasn’t working out” for him and didn't want to disappear with it. After getting released from WWE in May 2020, WWE stopped selling Sting’s merchandise and took his name from WWE Shop.
